STATE ADOPTION LAWS CONCERNING RELEASE OF ADULT ADOPTEES' ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATES (OBCs)
Currently, only TEN states in the United States grant adult adoptees access to their own original birth certificates: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island. This means that upon request and for a nominal fee, their OBCs will be released. These states are in GOLD text.
Some states grant access to some adult adoptees and not to others ("restrictions apply"), based on their current state laws and certain conditions imposed. Additionally, some states require a court order to release your OBC and provide a form to request it. These states are marked with an asterisk.
